Auvers-sur-Oise, France

This town is at least an hour outside of Paris, but you can get there using only the metro, which is an amazing deal.  Why go here?  It’s the last place that Vincent Van Gogh lived.  It is where he died and also where he is buried.  You can visit various areas that were the inspiration for his paintings, visit the room that he lived in for 70 days and where he also died.

We stopped in the park to see this unique statue of Van Gogh.

We got our tickets to see his room.  We had to wait 25 minutes for the next tour.  We read some plaques with information about Van Gogh and the town.  We took pictures of the outside of the boarding house/restaurant.

Vincent Van Gogh came to this town after his stay in a mental hospital from cutting off his ear.  He didn’t want to be in Paris because it was too busy.  He rented this room for 3.50 francs a night, which was quite a deal.

He painted 74 paintings in the 70 days that he lived in this town and also had many drawings.  We were not allowed to take pictures of the room that he stayed in because it was filled with the tour group and super tiny.  There was only a chair in the room, but there is a plexiglass over the wall where the bed was located and it contains original frames from his paintings.

The guide explained Vincent’s time in Auvers and showed pictures from a book.  We also saw his neighbor’s room, which is furnished, to get a better idea of what it looked like and then they showed us a video of some of his works while in the town and their inspiration. I thought it was interesting and worth it if you like Van Gogh as much as I do.

After the tour, we hiked up the hill at the end of the street. You can see the inspiration for his last paining of roots if you go left, but we went right to see different inspirations. This church was the subject of one of his more well known paintings.

This was his second to last painting. You can see his inspiration with the yellow fields. It is with a dark sky, which indicates his returning dark feelings.

We walked through the fields to the cemetery.  As you can see, his brother is buried with him.  His sister in law moved his grave because they had such a close relationship.  His brother was two years younger and paid for Vincent to discover his talents. His sister in law was the sole reason that Van Gogh is a well known name today.  She kept all his paintings and  initiated the exhibitions in the Netherlands and United States that started his fame.

I enjoyed the excursion to this little town.  I love Vincent Van Gogh and it was interesting to be able to walk around the same town that gave him a lot of inspiration.
