This is a very small town.  We did not have an excursion today because they were SUPER expensive due to the fact that the tour companies have to drive in from the capital.  We thought it would be nice to just walk around and check out the few things that were highlighted at the talk we attended about each port. 

We were not the only people who just decided to walk around.  I felt like most of the ship was out walking around.  We did not have to wait long to take the tender into port because we left a bit later than everyone else.  

We stopped briefly at a cafe/museum just up the hill from the port.  They had some amazing carvings; busts of different people, picture frames, even furniture.  I couldn’t tell you much about it because all the explanations were in Icelandic.  I still enjoyed the artistry.  

We decided to walk over to the egg sculptures first.  There are 34 eggs that are displayed.  Each one coincides with a bird from the area.  You can read which one on the plaque in front (the name is in Latin).  

The biggest egg is the bird of the town.  

I really loved this display.  They are true to life and made of this beautiful stone.  I didn’t love how everyone thought it was ok to climb all over them.  

Near the eggs there is an abandoned silo that you can enter.  They set up a pallet in the middle with candles around it.  You can stand on the pallet and say whatever you like and it echoes throughout.  It sounded really neat. 

We walked back through the town and stopped at the public bathrooms. We walked toward the mineral museum, but there were too many people there so we headed out to this house where a local man collects stones.  He has a little store in his garage and his back yard is filled with stones he collected.  It’s very impressive. 

The coolest thing about all these stones is that he collected them all in Iceland. Lava does interesting things to rocks. 

We returned to the center of town and I tried to look through the one souvenir shop along with fifty other people. They had tea towels for $25!  I didn’t see anything I really wanted so we headed back to the ship to eat lunch. 

Djupivogur was a neat little town, but I can see why when you tour around Iceland it is not a stop many people take. When we did our car trip around Iceland, we skipped this area.  However, I really did love those eggs!
